Inaugural Artist Residency: Richard Hards

From June to September 2024 ARC Independent hosted the artist Richard Hards at our Workshop within Torrisdale Street Studios, for a residency to develop ideas and designs for a new public artwork proposal. He was given access to the ARC Independent Workshop and was mentored by Craig Dow, Co-Director of ARC Independent, Pete Large, Design Engineer, and Emma Hargreaves, Project Manager for Glasgow City Council. We provided regular 1-to-1 and group feedback meetings about ideas, designs, and models.

It was fantastic to see him develop a range of public art proposals, experiment with new techniques in our workshop, and gain practical insight into designing work for public spaces. In turn, our team learned valuable lessons about supporting and mentoring an artist in a hands-on, community-focused way.

The residency was generously supported by Techné.

Richard used our Tool Workshop and tapped into the knowledge and skills of a variety of makers to develop maquettes and 3D renders to pitch for a new public artwork.

  • Maquette #1

Card maquettes were used as a starting point to develop a three-way ping pong table that could potentially be scaled up to full size and created with mild steel.

  • Maquette #2

Different materials were used to make a variety of maquettes, including different grades of cardboard, wood, metal and aluminium, pictured here.

  • 3D Renders

Richard worked with Design Engineer and ARC Independent Director Peter Large to develop a series of 3D models that can be used to both pitch the idea and understand the material requirements for a full-scale outdoor version.

Keep checking back here to see how the final designs progress and we look forward to seeing his work in our local community in the future.

Richard Hards is a multi-disciplinary artist from Bermondsey, London and is currently undertaking a Techné funded PhD at Kingston University.
